This is the only book in the entire New Testament that refers to Jesus as the "High Priest." Jesus did not have descent in bodily form through the priestly line of the tribe of Levi where the priests came from. This would naturally cause his Jewish audience confusion and render this exhortation difficult for Paul's audience to accept and understand. While the office of the high priest originally was a godly appointment in the first century it had degenerated into a political office and had little to do with God's intention for it. In the Old Testament there are only two places where the Messiah is referred to as a priest. They occur in Psalm 110 and Zechariah chapters three and four. These two instances have characteristics indicating both royalty and priestly facets. It is important to consider the general character of the High Priest as the Jewish audience would know this position.
