After revealing the deep truths of His role as the fulfiller of the Old Testament type of the divinely provided manna in a startlingly personal way, the Lord, hearing their grumbling and knowing their hearts, asks the crucial question in verse 61; "Does this offend you?" While never explicitly answering His question, verse 66 reveals their answer; "many went back and walked with Him no more." Within this exchange we learn a crucial fact – unless the Holy Spirit works in the hearts of the hearer, the unregenerate will never receive the truth with joy. Rather, the unregenerate will "turn back" and resume what was the previously normal day to day life. If we accept the premise that Jesus was and is the Christ, we can infer that the problem was neither the message nor the messenger. The implication is not that we should be passive and careless, nor to have no concern for the unregenerate, but to continue to follow the Lord's example. During His earthly ministry He consistently declared the truth and lived the truth even in the midst of so many who rejected Him. – Pastor Schlegel
