There were false teachers in Peter’s time who scoffed at the idea of the return of Christ. Paul also dealt with false teachers who taught there would be no day of judgement, and that the resurrection had already occurred such as Hymenaeus and Philetus.
They taught the resurrection was spiritual only, and that it had already come. There would be no seeing Jesus in the flesh.
These teachings are heresies that were overthrowing the faith of some in the church - not the elect, for they could never lose their faith - but many were being led astray by it.
Now today Christians are divided on many things. But mark this, every Creed and Confession, every denomination, affirms the second coming of Jesus Christ, the resurrection, and the final judgment from the Nicene Creed of 325 AD to the Westminster Confession of 1648 down to the present day.
Additionally, regardless of what they disagree on, every major eschatological position amil, postmil, premil, also affirms these things.
All of them except for a relatively new position called Hyper or Full Preterism which has once again "resurrected" the false teachings of Hymenaeus and Philetus and the proto-gnostics of the early church.
