Elders: Who Are They and What Do They Do? 1 Timothy 3:1-7
Plurality of eldership-- Acts 15:4, 14:23, 20:17, Phil 1:1, Titus 1:5, 1 Peter 5:1, James 5:14
The pattern is quite clear. Again and again, elders (plural) in each church (singular).
1. Who can be an elder? i. An elder must be a man ii. One must want to be an elder iii. An elder exemplifies godly character iv. An elder can teach the word v. An elder leads his family well vi. An elder is not a novice
2. What does an elder do? i. Elders exercise oversight ii. Elders are to pray and teach iii. Elders are to smell like sheep iv. Elders are to protect sheep v. Elders are to set an example vi. Elders are to raise up elders
Concluding Thoughts: i. To the elders--we are accountable ii. To the men--we need more elders iii. To the congregation--help your elders iv. Jesus is the chief shepherd
