This Evening Worship sermon continues the semi-monthly series titled, “The Christian Life in Picture.” This will develop the major New Testament metaphors that depict the Christian's identity. This sermon explores the Christian's place as a slave in the Family of God. The picture of slave is in sharp contrast to that of son or saint as previously discussed. The Christian is deemed a “slave” first by the fact that he is a creature with a Creator who gave him being and to whom he owes homage and obedience. Second is the fact that he has been redeemed from the power and consequences of sin by this same Creator. Jesus modeled, demonstrated and commanded the service He demands of the Christian. Paul and other biblical writers repeatedly and consistently refer to themselves as “servant,” “slave” or “prisoner of the Lord.” May this imagery speak to us of the matchless love that God grants the Christian through his grace.
