Truth is indeed precious because God is the God of truth. Even those who suppress the truth in unrighteousness are aware of the inescapable reality and necessity of truth. Everyone is made in the image of God and therefore knows that they cannot function in this world, God's world, without truth. Pilate's view of life in this world denied the existence of an absolute truth. Pilate, however, was a judge and his responsibility was to get to the truth in cases that were brought before him so he could pass judgement. When he said to Jesus, “What is truth?” it was in the context of trying to find out who Jesus was and whether the charges brought against Him were true or not. Pilate scoffed at the idea of absolute truth even though he knew that society couldn't hold together without truth playing an important role in the workings of life. Pilate is no different from countless others who have the same attitude in life towards absolute truth—they deny it while knowing that life cannot function without truth existing in some kind of way.
