Part of our Savior's specific mission is "to heal the brokenhearted." Christian people are acquainted with heart-ache and heart-break. Christian people feel deeply as God their father trains them, and trains them he does. This incident in King David's life is something like Titus 2:12 in story form. Here are at least four gracious lessons indelibly taught: First, God's grace meets you as and where you are NOW; not where you ought to be but where you are NOW. Second, preach the gospel to yourself. This is essentially what David did. This is what you must do especially if you are in dire straights that you got yourself into. Third, do not underestimate the ability of God to suddenly reverse your situation. This incident in David's life demonstrates this in a jaw dropping way. Fourth, your brothers and sisters in Christ need to be loved with a warm, generous discretionary way. This last point is negatively taught. Note the amazing selfishness of some of the men. They resent giving their brethren anything but the bare minimum. Spurgeon commented on these men as those who were probably the first to mutiny against David proposing to stone him. "Complainers," Spurgeon said "are usually selfish." Indeed.
