Divorce and Remarriage - Part 1
As we approach the difficult subject of divorce and remarriage, we want to keep in mind some important truths. 1) We must speak of this and not neglect it. It is too important to ignore. 2) Those who are believers and divorced need to remember that divorce/and or remarriage is not unforgivable and not beyond the grace of God. It is no better, but no worse, than lying, stealing, coveting, idolatry, etc. Divorced Christians are not second-class citizens. They are clothed in the righteousness of Christ. 3) We need to recognize that what Jesus told the disciples was shocking to them, just as His teaching that marriage is a permanent contract and divorce and remarriage is adulterous is shocking to us today; 4) We must recognize that many pastors and scholars disagree about the "exception clause" found in Matthew 5:32 (and also Matthew 19), but this does not mean that all interpretations are valid. One is correct and the others are wrong. We must have cogent reason for the view we take and not simply rely on Pastor Famous to do the work for us. 5) We must remember that experience is never our guide for conduct or for ethics. One person may feel they have been divorced and remarried and are "fine", but who defines what is fine? And for every person who feels fine, many others are living in a mess. Scripture, not any person's experience, is our only infallible guide. 6) Finally, we need to remember that singleness is not hell on earth. There is much to be commended about the single life. Divorcees should consider what a great opportunity they have for single minded service to God.
