I think the pivotal points in our lives can be traced to questions we were asked and how we answered.
This passage is the hinge of upon which the gospel story that Mark tells hangs. Up to this point the disciples have been with Jesus for 2 ½ to 3 years. During this time Christ has given many expressions of his power— His words about himself were packed with significant inference to his divinity (I am the light of the world, I am the Son of Man, I am the bread of life). His teachings bore the authority of God as well he said, “You have heard it said… but I say unto you. As if his words bore full authority all their own.” His power over demons and nature, deformity, disease and even death all pointed to His Divine Personhood, all pointed to His Messiah-ship. In all these events the initial suspicion of the disciples was being confirmed. They had said, “Is this not the Christ?” It appeared more and more to be the case. But up until this point in time Jesus has never invited their pronouncement on the matter, their own verbal declaration. But now He will.
