Beginning with another "do you not know" rhetorical question, Paul brackets his third vice list in this epistle with the phrase "inherit the kingdom of God," negated. Those who live such lifestyles are unrighteous and lost since they live for the pleasures of this present world. These lists are not intended to be comprehensive but illustrative of what it looks like to live as those who are unrighteous. This is in the context of Paul's admonition against Christians taking each other to court before the "unrighteous." This warning does not mean that believers are not safe in Christ, but nevertheless is a valid warning that God will use. Paul reminds them that God saved them from such things by saying "such were some of you." Using three words of stark contrast , Paul says that they were washed, sanctified, and justified. Christians are people who have been rescued from the clutches of wickedness and sin and given an eternal inheritance in the kingdom of God. We explain what that means and why it is important. In the applications to this, we expound passages about both the warnings and promises concerning wrath, turning to Christ, and being assured of a future inheritance in the kingdom of God. The end of the sermon deals with what it means to be born new in John 3:1-8. This is where Jesus interacts with Nicodemus and points to the mighty work of the Spirit which gives new birth. The likely background is for this is found in Ezekiel 36:25-27 which Nicodemus would have known about. Being a believer is through God's powerful work of regeneration.
