Paul has shown that God has given to the Gentiles that which the Jews seek after, specifically, the righteousness of God. The Jews however have not obtained it. This begs the question: has God cast away His people! Paul answers with an emphatic "NO!" What Israel has not obtained the elect has obtained. In every generation, including our own, there is a remnant of ethnic Jews who by faith have embraced Jesus as their Messiah. Not only this, but all Gentiles who believe are counted as a part of the Israel of God as well. In these verses we consider the election of a remnant and the rejection of the remainder.
