In the book of the Proverbs, the actual listing of proverbial statements begins in Proverbs 10 and extends to the end of the book. A proverbial statement might be defined as a short, pithy saying that expresses a significant, substantial truth for life. In Proverbs 28:13-14 we find two proverbs that are connected to one another in the truths that they present. Grammatically, each proverb presents a truth of contrast concerning two categories of believers. (Note: The matter of confessing sin only applies to the daily walk of believers. Lost sinners need to make the decision of repentance and faith in Christ for eternal salvation. Believers need to make the practice of repentance and confession of sin for daily fellowship.) On the one hand, there is the category of those believers who stubbornly attempt to cover their sins. On the other hand, there is the category of those believers who submissively confess and forsake their sins. Furthermore, the two proverbs together present truths of parallel concerning these two categories of believers. On the one hand, those believers who attempt to cover their sins are set in parallel with those who harden their hearts against the Lord. On the other hand, those believers who confess and forsake their sins are set in parallel with those who walk in the fear of the Lord. Even so, in Proverbs 28:13-14 we find four contrasts concerning these two categories of believers.
1. The Contrast of Confession. (v. 13)
2. The Contrast of Consequence. (v. 13)
3. The Contrast of Conscience. (v. 14)
4. The Contrast of Conclusion. (v. 14)
