Salt and light are two necessities to sustain human life. Without salt the body cannot survive. It is responsible for maintaining your body's fluid levels. Salt was especially necessary in the ancient world in order to preserve food when there was no refrigeration. Who can imagine a world where there is absolutely no light? Again there is no human life without light—no sight without light—no food without light. Jesus doesn't use these two figures of salt and light to describe what is merely desirable in the Christian life, but rather what is necessary. There is no true Christian that is not salt or that is not light. Therefore, the words of Jesus cannot be cast aside as something you will consider when you get around to it. If you claim to be a Christian, these words of Jesus are of the utmost importance; for just as salt and light are necessary to your physical life, so salt and light are necessary to your spiritual life.
