The writer of Hebrews continues with the theme of why Jesus Christ is greater than any created being including the angels. He uses Old Testament passages to prove his point. He starts by referencing Psalm 89:27 where God the Father calls God the Son the firstborn. Then, he quotes Psalm 97:7 where the last word is typically translated gods, but in the Septuagint it is translated angels. Put together, his argument is that as since He is the firstborn of all creation, the angels who are simply powerful creatures have an obligation to worship Him. He uses Psalm 104:4 to testify to the power of the angels and to testify that they are just the servants of Christ. He then goes to Psalm 45 (our Psalm of the Month) to declare that while angels are ministers to aid in ruling, He is the King. As we start the New Year, it is good to remember that Christ is the one that is ruling and He has beings far mightier than any earthly creature that cause His will to be done. May we join Him in loving righteousness and hating lawlessness for that is the means to greater joy.
