This narrative is one of the better known passages in the book of Numbers. A careful look at this passage reveals that it is really about spiritual naivety; not rebellion or laziness. Truth be told, faith in its earliest stage is compatible with a high degree of ignorance, foolishness, and insensibility in the conscience. There are character bents and prejudices that frankly--survive conversion. On one occasion Pat Riley, former head coach of the L. A. Lakers, summarized what the NBA is about: "The NBA is about winning," he said. We might add sort of a spiritual corollary about the culture we live in: "The culture you live in is about personal pleasure." Don't naively think that you have not lived in this culture for so many years without being shaped by it. The naive fault of the two and one-half tribes will be repeated this year in relatively good Christian assemblies. They failed to shoulder their mutual corporate responsibilities because they had what they wanted. Naive people are less guilty than well informed people. Damage will follow nevertheless. This passage is a striking illustration of what it means to "keep the unity of the Spirit" among the people of God. Spiritual unity includes responsibility. Do not be missing from your place.
