Christians face a choice when trouble comes - either become demoralised and settle for little, or exercise faith in Christ and serve him. That was the choice facing King Saul and Jonathan when the Philistines invaded. Saul seemed to feel beaten already. His army had fled. The enemy was raiding his land and had even robbed them of their weapons. Does that sound familiar? Is it a picture of many parts of the church today? Would you think of attacking the enemy in those circumstances? That is what Jonathan did. Unlike Saul he focused on what God had said and done, not on present circumstances. It is not surprising he did not tell the God-appointed ruler what he was about to do - that ruler had already accepted defeat. There is no middle ground between accepting defeat and attacking the powers of darkness. When we act in accordance with God's will we have his authority and can expect to see his power at work. So we must never say, 'This person will never be saved'; or, 'This church should be closed down'. 'It matters nothing with God to save by many or by few.' Do it.
