As Genesis 9 opens, Moses begins by setting forth LORD's blessing upon Noah and his family. A blessing which is much like, indeed parallel to, the blessing of God upon Adam and Eve. This might bring the reader to question: “Did God's blessing upon Adam and Eve fail?” The LORD blessed these saying: “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.” Now, only Noah and his family remain. Not much fruit after hundreds of years. It might be thought then that as a result of their sin, and the just punishment of the flood, this blessing of God came to naught, to nothing.
But that would be a mistake, an error. For God’s word never fails, and certainly, His blessings accomplish all that He intends by and through them. We must think then, not of the blessing as failing, but the blessing as continuing. The LORD had chosen to fulfill His blessing upon Adam and Eve now solely through one man and his family: Noah. So the question is not whether the blessing failed, but HOW would the blessing be now fulfilled?
