Peter calls us to holiness in all our behavior. While we are citizens of heaven, we are ambassadors for Jesus Christ here on earth. Since the world hated our Lord and put Him to death, it will also hate us, as we are conformed to Him. In understanding how suffering can come from abuse of authority, Peter now addresses husbands and how they are to treat their wives. The husband represents Jesus Christ in the marriage relationship, while the wife represents His Church that He died to save. Here we look at this Christian wife belongs to the Lord Jesus Christ and has been given into the care and keeping of her husband. She is every bit as valuable to God as is her husband, and her standing in Christ is just the same as his, therefore his treatment of her is to reflect these truths. As this section ends we come to a wonderful summary of how we are to live as believers in whatever situations our loving Lord brings into our lives. We are to be examples of our Lord, by being kindhearted and humble in all that we do. Humility causes one to see his own inadequacy and therefore is strong in faith as it drives us to rely on our great God for guidance and strength. Humility sees things as God says they truly are and not according to the deceptions of the world, the flesh and Satan. In seeing things as God does, He has told us to not deal in vengeance or evil but to give our enemies a blessing instead.
