Several unusual and miraculous births are recorded in the Bible. Isaac, Samson, Samuel, and John the Baptist were all born of women who had been barren, and most of them were well beyond the age of childbearing. Modern science has produced “test tube babies” and children conceived by “in vitro” fertilization. Even more recently, an experimental laboratory procedure known as parthenogenesis (from the two Greek words meaning “virgin birth”) has produced species of honeybees, silkworms, and female frogs that are genetically identical to the mother who laid the unfertilized eggs.
But no experimental form of reproduction has been successful on the human level. The conception of Christ in the womb of the virgin Mary stands unique. Only God could have wrought this wonderful miraculous birth. A virgin's womb became the “workshop of the Holy Spirit.”
We would do well to take a closer look at Mary, the young maiden chosen by God to fulfill the marvelous prophecy that the Messiah would be born of a virgin.
