Many people today are confused over the law and what its purpose really was and is. It was added in light of man's sin and in light of God's purpose in grace. We might think that the law came in order that man might be saved by keeping the law. But that's not the purpose of the law. The law becomes a vehicle by which I come to know what sin is, because God says, don't do this and I do it, I violate the law. I am revealed to be a sinner. Before the law was given, people were sinners in their very being. in their very nature, but sin was not recognizable in the way it is after the giving of the law. Because there were not clear, specific commandments given. No longer can we just say that man is a sinner because Adam's sin was imputed to him, but man has become a sinner in the same way that Adam did by being a violator of God's law. He has done the same thing that Adam did. He has violated the clear, revealed commandment of God.
