I think out of all the animals in the world it seems to me that the Bible compares HUMANS to sheep more than any other animal.
Psalm 100.3 Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
1 Kings 22.17 And he said, I saw all Israel scattered upon the hills, as sheep that have not a shepherd…
Matt 10.16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves…
Now why would God compare us to sheep? Well I think it is because we have similar characteristics.
Sheep are directionally challenged…they easily get lost.
Isa 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Secondly, particularly in the East at the time of Jesus. Sheep were highly valued by every shepherd.
If you are away from God, He wants to search you out, primarily not to punish you but rather to rescue you from the consequences of your sin. Luke 19.10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
1 Peter 3.18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: The Tax Collectors and the Sinners had a bad reputation as far as the Pharisees were concerned but Jesus willingly sought them out to bring salvation to them.
King David knew that He was valued even though he knew he too was like a Lamb, he knew that He was loved by His God who is like a Shepherd to His people.
If you are away from God, He wants to search you out.
