All the false religions of the world are about works righteousness - the attempt by sinners to please God by following some rules or laws.
Yet the righteousness of God is moral perfection, without a single fault. Thus, no man is righteous.
Nor can righteousness be repaired by amassing a pile of good works, for such can never overcome a single wrong to restore the perfection that is broken.
Paul describes the Jews as having a zeal for God, but not based upon knowledge. In other words, they are ignorant of God's righteousness, and go about to establish their own righteousness.
This is madness, and futility. But all men follow after this scheme, because they are ignorant. Sin blinds man's heart to understand the holiness of God and the offense of our sin.
God promised His people that the Lord Jesus would be our righteousness. He is righteousness, and by submitting to Him, He becomes our righteousness also!
Thus we have imputed to us Christ's perfections and glories by faith in Him and His promises.
But wicked men still refuse to come unto Christ and accept His righteousness as their own - because they are ignorant, blinded by sin.
Those who refuse Christ's righteousness are doomed to stand before God without righteousness of any sort, and suffer shame and eternal judgment.
The worst example of rejecting Christ's righteousness is seen when wicked Israel judged Jesus guilty of death when He had done nothing wrong. They rejected Christ as the "Lord our Righteousness."
Jesus can only be our righteousness because He takes upon Himself at Calvary our guiltiness, is judged for our sins, and satisfies God's holy justice in our place by His shed blood.
