The Trinity: The Foundation of Love
Before we consider what it means to love God with all our hearts and our neighbors as ourselves, it is important to consider the very meaning of love. Though I do not wish to complicate something simple, there is another danger in merely assuming the definition of love without a proper biblical foundation. In 1 John 4, we are told that God is love and that love is from God. Therfore, we cannot rightly think about love apart from God. He controls the definition. We cannot bring a Hollywood definition into the scriptures and make sense of anything. The nature of love begins long before there were any creature -- angels or humans. God is love and God was love for billions of years before there was a planet earth. Consequently, love has something to do with the persons of the Trinity. We will consdider Trinitarian love -- God's love of complacence, or delight, and His love of benevolence, that is, His love of giving what is good. Then, we will consider the ramifications of Trinitarian love as it pertains to God's love for men.
