Sermon Text: 1 Timothy 1:15 "The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost." (ESV)
Old Testament: Jeremiah 17:1-9 Psalm 15 Reference to: Exodus 20: 1-17
* Paul summarizes the 10 Commandments in vs 9-10. * Paul names himself as a teacher of the truth, followed by his personal testimony in vs 12-14 * In vs. 15, Paul's statement, "...of whom I am the foremost." is not a comparison of himself with others, nor a statement of observation, but a statement of personal reflection on the depth of his own sin.
Popular culture is focused on self-esteem. The biblical picture is the opposite.
"Alas! and did my Savior bleed, and did my Sovereign die! Would he devote that sacred head for such a worm as I?"
"Alas and Did my Savior Bleed" (vs. 1), Issaac Watts 1707, Trinity Hymnal (Rev. Ed.) #254
The OPC Communicant Membership Vow #3: "3) Do you confess that because of your sinfulness you abhor and humble yourself before God, that you repent of your sin, and that you trust for salvation not in yourself but in Jesus Christ alone?" (OPC Book of Church Order, Directory for Public Worship, IV.B.2(3)) http://www.opc.org/BCO/DPW.html#Chapter_IV
"Abhor" comports with 1 Timothy 1:15 and Psalm 51:3-4; 40:11-12
