Following the reign of Abijam over Judah, was Asa, a better king, who still failed to finish well. An unrepentant heart led to sin multiplying - a pattern that can quickly develop, unraveling what was previously, a godly life.
All the while reigning over Israel in the north, was Jeroboam whose sins we are told, provoked the Lord. This resulted in his family line coming to an end in devastating judgment after his son Nadab is assasinated after assuming the throne. Baasha, who reigned as a means of God imposing that judgment, did no better. He failed to learn anything from what he observed of the consequences of sin, doing "evil in the sight of the Lord," as did his son Elah. Judgment comes upon Elah by means of Zimri who reigned only seven days. Zimri's conspiracy is avenged by Omri who then takes the throne. The worst is yet to come when his son, Ahab takes the throne with his wife, Jezebel.
