How we think of God affects everything. That is why it is vital to begin our look at the Atonement by considering how God's mercy and justice are related, and remembering that God's attributes are in harmy, not in conflict. The Atonement is therefore to be understood as exprressing both God's justice and mercy, not just one or the other, and as expressing the character of God, and not only of one Person of the Trinity. The Atonement is penal and substitutionary, and of infinite value. The Gospel is to be preached to the whole world.
