Compassion that Exposes Need
The good Samaritan is possibly the most misunderstood parable in the Bible. It is a parable Jesus told in response to a question posed by a proud teacher of the law. He, like any self-righteous person, finds it hard to see what God has done through Jesus. He has fake humility, with which he wants to bait and trap Jesus. he should understand the answer to his question, but he doesn't. Desperately hungry people will beg for food. But people rarely ask for spiritual help with this desperation. Isn't this a demonstration of our insufferable self-righteousness? Jesus therefore takes him to the law, his favourite topic. The teacher quotes Jesus' own words in response. Jesus affirms his reply, yet exposes his moral poverty. An immediate sense of desperation escapes him; instead, he attempts another self-justification to relieve the pressure of confrontation. Jesus shoves the pressure back by relating the events of the parable of the good Samaritan. Although the teacher certainly assents to the high morality of the Samaritan, he himself is not engaged in such actions. Rather than fulfilling the entire law, he hasn't even taken the first real step in caring for an obvious need before him. Such a man desperately needs the Jesus before him. Your failure and mine render us desperately in need of Jesus too. If this sermon opens your eyes to this need, it has reached its mark.
