If you had lived in Jerusalem around the time of the Roman census, the first one taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria, you might have run into him. Especially if you frequented the temple precincts. It was hard to say how old he was, but there certainly something unique about this guy! In those difficult and despondent days, he seemed unusually optimistic and energetic. Sometimes praying, sometimes singing the Psalms as he walked through Jerusalem's streets and temple porticoes. He looked at you! He was especially attentive to small children. He would often stop a young family, in a kind and completely nonthreatening way, and ask about them, and their children. Sometimes he would gently pull back the wrappings around a baby's face and tiny hands, and peer into dark little eyes. Then he might shake his head, just a little, and move on. Almost as if he was searching for someone…someone specific. His name was Simeon, his search finally ended, his hopes were finally realized, and then Simeon sang for joy! Someday, the nations will sing with him! We'll consider how God honored His Son through the carol of an unsung Christmas hero: i.) Simeon prepares (vv.25-26); ii.) Simeon praises (vv.27-32); iii.) Simeon prophesies (vv.33-35).
