David knew full well what he was doing in our text. Had he not been where he didn't belong at the time he wouldn't have faced temptation. Since he was there though he fell and got caught. This led to his cover up which didn't work out. That lead to David having to take more drastic steps to cover his sin. It didn't matter though because God uncovered his sin, just as He will do ours when we fail to confess those sins to Him.
