When Gabriel visited Mary, she was "greatly troubled" by his opening words. Because humanity is sinful, divine visitations are frightening. Those visited are often told, "Do not be afraid." However, when the encouragement to "fear not" is coupled with "the Lord is with you," difficult tasks are callings are in view. Such is the case with Mary. She had been "graced" by God in being chosen to bear the Messiah. But she would need the Lord to be with her for this path would bring much trouble and suffering. Nonetheless, she should "rejoice" for God has chosen to use her and she will endure for the Lord is with her.
