Aim: To understand that there is a lot at stake in the Battle of Religions; and that we must side with the Lord Jesus.
Exegesis: The battle over grace is won for us by God (vv. 8-9a), is waged in us by the flesh (v. 9b), and is witnessed in us by our practices (vv. 10-11). The battle over truth requires that we go back to our first love (vv. 12-14) and our first joy (vv. 15-16). The battle over hearts calls on us to be discerning (v. 17), consistent (v. 18), and mature (vv. 19-20).
Key verses: vv. 8-9 ''But then, indeed, when you did not know God, you served those which by nature are not gods. But now after you have known God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you turn again to the weak and beggarly elements, to which you desire again to be in bondage?''
