One thing is certain: We live in uncertain times. People are fearful-- afraid of ISIS and another terrorist attack. Afraid of a future economic collapse. But many not only struggle with fear, but with a sense of hopelessness. They feel hopeless to do anything about the terroristic threats, hopeless about staving off a economic meltdown. Our elected officials on both sides of the aisle have broken their promises of reform. Many simply do not trust their government for their safety or wellbeing. Where does one turn when they are feeling hopeless? This sermon is the first in a series of Christmas sermons on fear and hopelessness. The first snap shot features an elderly couple-- Zechariah and Elizabeth-- who had given up hope of ever having a son to take care of them in their old age. In a 'once in a lifetime' experience, God sends His angel, Gabriel, with a message of Hope. Hope, first of all, because God hears and answers prayers! Zechariah and Elizabeth would have a son after all in their sunset years. Secondly, hope because God has a plan! God is in control of what is happening in Zechariah's world, and what is happening in ours. But know God has a plan, and trusting Him are two different things. Zechariah expresses his lack of confidence that God would provide. But we can have hope because thirdly, God keeps His promises. What He says He will do, He will. You can count on God to keep His Word-- but in His time and in His way. Fear Not! There's Hope!
