The words of today's text form the final words of doctrine and instruction the Savior gave to His disciples before His arrest and execution (as recorded in the Gospel of John). They form what could be called both a summary and conclusion of His bequest to them here at the end of His earthly ministry. While He will yet speak and minister to them, it will only be after His resurrection. By then, everything will have changed. In the Savior's final instruction, we see a much concerning the disciples' faith. They obviously believe that He is the promised Messiah. What they don't know, or at least yet perceive, is that the Messiah must suffer and die. They have not yet contemplated the fact that the Messiah's victorious kingdom will look nothing like the kingdoms of this world. So, here at the end, He exhorts them to not lose heart and to continue to place their trust in Him because He has overcome the world. What was disaster according to their eyes will win the victory when He dies on the cross. But in His death and resurrection the divine eternal plan finds its glorious end. – Pastor Schlegel
