As we consider the incarnation, we pose the following question: Why did the Son of God take on human flesh? Why did He become a baby in a manger and grow to manhood? There are many biblical answers, but the answer of Heb. 2:14-18 is that Christ had to be made like His brethren in order to deliver them from him who had the power of death -- that, is the devil. The devil keeps men in fear of death because they fear the judgment of God that comes after death. The devil provides many different religions and empty rituals and sacraments to "help" people deal with their fear. But of course, it doesn't work. The human conscience is not able to rest in anything buyt the atoning death of Christ. Man-made religious rituals will not suffice. Christ was born into this world to die, that by His death He might free elect believers from the enslaving fear of death and give them confidence before the throne.
