As we saw last time, the fruit of the Spirit is revealed in the inner life of the believer. The believer's thoughts, attitudes, and heart-condition should be characterized by love, joy, and peace. The apostle teaches us these things so that we may be both comforted and challenged. We should be comforted because we have the promise that the Holy Spirit will be constantly at work in us because we are united with Christ by whom we have this new life. We should also be challenged because the life of the believer is one of constant self-examination. We ought ot be asking ourselves if we see any fruit in our own lives whether in the inner secret life or in the outward life lived before others. This is where we find ourselves today – the outward manifestations. A spiritual life, that is, one lived in union with Christ and by the power of the Holy Spirit, should be revealed in how we behave. This is not a bare and mere exercise of the will, for the will is fallen and pride deceives. Rather, the outward manifestations are the natural outworking of the of the work done in us. And like the inner virtues, you are to examine yourself and see if there is any fruit. If there is no fruit, there is a serious problem and we know the problem is not with the Savior; we are – Pastor Schlegel
