God made a covenant with Abraham and promised to give his descendants the land of the Canaanites as their own possession. Yet the wise old man looked with the eyes of faith and knew that God was promising him more than real estate in Palestine. He knew that the physical land was only a type and shadow of a greater spiritual reality. So the Hebrew writer tells us plainly that he waited for a city that has foundations, whose Builder and Maker is God. He looked to a heavenly country and the New Jerusalem. As the heirs of Abraham's covenant then, we who have believed in Christ have become the heirs of new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
