With so many babies being born around this time, I wanted to take the opportunity to reflect on the Song of Mary, and what this song says to women.

She is the only virgin in history who conceived and bore a child while remaining a virgin. When Gabriel says to her, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you,” he asserts the uniqueness of Mary. She alone bears the Son of God – and since the one who is born of her is true God, she alone is rightly called “the God-bearer” (or Mother of God).
Sometimes people are uncomfortable with that phrase “Mother of God”, but if you say that Mary is not the Mother of God, then you are saying that Jesus is not God! If Jesus is God, then Mary gave birth to one who is God – and so Mary is rightly called “the God-bearer” (or Mother of God)... |
