As we continue our look at Jonah, it is my desire that you see the big picture and the calling that God places on our life in this Old Testament epistle. So, I want to review the literary themes found in this book.
The first literary theme that we find in the book of Jonah is that of Jonah’s hatred and the message of God’s wrath on account of hatred. The occasion for the wrath of God at this time was Nineveh’s trampling underfoot the weak and helpless amongst them (Jonah 3:2, 4, 8)! On account of creation and the subsequent calling that God has placed on mankind, care for the weak and helpless is an obligation of all people and nations; it is what comprises “true and undefiled religion in the sight of God” (James 1:27)!
