Spiritual revival is for you and I who have a personal relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ, but who have lost our way. The fire that once burned within us has grown cold. The seduction of this world has lured us away from our simple devotion to Jesus Christ. When that happens we need God to reignite the fire of His Word. We need revival. Genuine spiritual revival follows a certain pattern and these three steps are evident in Nehemiah 8-10. First, revival begins with the proclamation of God's Word. (Nehemiah 8). Secondly, it deepens with the confession of sin (Nehemiah 9). And thirdly, revival solidifies by the commitments we make to God (Nehemiah 10). In the first of a six-part series on revival, we consider the proclamation of God's Word. The Jews in Nehemiah's time were spiritually hungry. God used Ezra to preach in a expository way, making plain what the Scriptures say, so that the people could understand God's Word and respond accordingly. For revival to come, people need to clearly hear God's Word. A sign of spiritual health is an appetite to hear God's Word. Like newborn babes we are to desire the sincere milk of the Word to grow thereby. But why do we lose our spiritual hunger? What suppresses our appetite? As the sermon closes we look at the common spiritual suppressants that can dull our spiritual senses. Oh how we need spiritual revival in our time--to hear the proclamation of God's Word!
