OT Israel lived under an agreement with God we call the Mosaic or Old Covenant. Under the Old Covenant, faith in God was to produce obedience to the Law and participation in the tabernacle sacrifices. The Law spelled out what Holy God required and the repeated bloody sacrifices symbolized payment for fallen man's inevitable failure to keep God's Law. All the while, God was promising (in the Scriptures) and previewing (in the sacrifices) a final, once and for all, sin offering. First century Judaism anticipated the promised Messiah as a super Davidic King. Like David, but bigger, stronger, wiser… and eternal. Then Jesus of Nazareth appeared, preached the Kingdom, healed the lame, confounded Pharisees, claimed to be the Son of David, the only way to God, the giver of eternal life…and then died on the cross. The shameful death of a Roman criminal! Yet His apostles preached in Him the mediator of a new and better covenant with God. A replacement for the inadequate Old Covenant of Law. Many Jews listened, many believed….but many were skeptical. Who follows a crucified King? Yet the writer of Hebrews reminded them, and us, of the precedence for, and necessity of, of Jesus' death.
Only Jesus' death makes eternal life and an eternal inheritance possible for believers in every age: i.) Jesus the mediator of a better covenant (v.15); ii.) Jesus the benefactor of a blessed testament (vv.16-17); iii.) Jesus is the fulfillment a familiar picture (vv.18-21); iv. Jesus is the satisfaction of a saving principle (v.22).
