Aim: To boldly speak Jesus' name—as His beloved church.
Doctrine: The very speaking of Jesus' name transforms the entire world. This is because it reminds all people of their sin and guilt, but also of how powerful (and wonderful) the God-man really is.
Exegesis: How believers become courageous speakers of Jesus' name: first, we personally know Christ savingly and lovingly (v. 13); then, we trust Christ's strength (so that we are not intimidated by men) (vv. 14-17); finally, we get determined to honor God (even in the face of the wrath of sinners) (vv. 18-22).
Further application: Why all redeemed churchmen should speak Jesus' name: because it glorifies the God we profess to love, and it demonstrates the sincerity of our gospel faith.
Key verses: vv. 18-20 ''So they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said to them, 'Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.'''
