In view of believers' call to holiness by God, Peter instructs us to "abstain from fleshly lusts." The Apostle John defines the three types of lusts that we struggle against in 1 John 2:15-17 -- lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. What all of these categories of lusts have in common is that they are rooted in the natural desires of our body that become either over-prioritized or fulfilled in a selfish and sinful way. In elevating our earthly desires above God's heavenly priorities, we anchor ourself to this earth, which is not our real home. We must maintain God as the center and source of our lives in order to succesfully navigate this pilgrimage we call our earthly life.
