Jesus has been preaching to a group of Jewish leaders in Jerusalem's temple. Many of the Jews had seemed to believe in Jesus (30), but soon grew hostile. His teaching on the evidences of true discipleship and spiritual sonship offended them deeply! V.47 – Jesus had warned Israel's leaders: "He who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God." The Jews fired back (v.48) – "You are a Samaritan and You have a demon!" It wasn't an answer; it was an insult of first order, and an affront to Jesus' honor.
