Beloved Joseph: RIP Joseph lived a long and fascinating life, but much of it was anything but peace-filled. Yet at the end of his life we sense that he had a peaceful departure. The very things that sustained him through life ushered him into glory. From the beginning he knew the Covenant promise of God that “He would be their God and they would be His people” first-hand. The near presence of His covenant Lord was a saving grace all along his crazy journey. At 110 he expires, his body is embalmed and his “bones” are stored for a post-mortem journey to the land of his fathers, but his soul was received into paradise - nearer to his God than ever! He also kept his eye on the Covenant promise God gave to him and all his people for that very paradise. It was firm promise but it was only illustrated by a parcel of earthly real estate. The real thing is far more glorious and everlasting, “a better country, that is, a heavenly one.” Bodies may be embalmed, dry bones may turn to dust, but living souls of the saints go to be with the Lord. In that great resurrection day souls and rejuvenated bodies will be reunited to live on the new earth under the new heavens. This is all true because of what Jesus did in conquering the grave. When Joseph sojourned he could only see the Savior faintly on the horizon – but God, who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 4:6 and even though “For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face.” Now we know in part; then we shall know fully, even as we have been fully known. 1Corinthians 13:12
