Those who have felt the pains and sorrows of schism cherish Psalm 133. God has ordained joy to come from our unity in the church. David enjoyed being with the people of God. His word, Behold, tells us to come look, because this is a rare thing, this unity. Very few are willing to sacrifice to have it in the church. Most would rather leave than, in love and humility, work through the problems and differences that are characteristic of most churches today. When relationships are valued, they are worth everything to maintain and preserve. How can we have this unity? First of all, we must learn to abide in Christ. We need to make much of Christ (and not of ourselves), and make much of His people. Then, we must pray; pray for unity, pray for humility, and pray for perseverance. We must endeavor to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:3). |
