That's where King Saul finds himself in 1 Samuel 28 – without God and his Word. This is a story of great fear and despair. Because of his own reckless, persistent disobedience, the Lord was no longer there when he needed him. Instead of crying out to God in true repentance in the face of God's silence he simply turned to the next best thing to receive the guidance he so desperately needed– a medium. God had become a means to an end. When God was no longer available to Saul he simply turned to another means!
In seeking to bring up the spirit of Samuel, Saul demonstrated his willingness to access the dark powers of the occult to save his own skin in further rebellion to God! The final tragic despair of Saul – alone, terrified of death and under the judgment of God – demonstrates the great danger of allowing our hearts to be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
