The essence of what it means to partake of the Lord's Supper is found in vs.26 'For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till he comes.' What does it mean to 'proclaim' the Lord's death in this context? When we partake of the Supper we are declaring that Christ's death is the only basis or source for our redemption, and we are also declaring that His death is the pattern for how we will live our lives. We are committing ourselves to self-sacrifice for God's glory and for the benefit of Christ's body. The elements of the Supper themselves are not proclaiming the Lord's death, rather, those who partake of the elements are identifying themselves with what the elements portray--death to self for the glory of God and the benefit of His body. When we receive the elements we proclaim our commitment to that way of living, and this is done before the throne of heaven. It is also a declaration of the fact that the victory is ours through Christ's death and that we acknowledge that the ongoing victory in the Kingdom of God is through dying to self. Paul's application of this is both universal and also specific for the particular sin being committed in Corinth. The sermon also deals with the question of the frequency of the Supper--to insist on weekly communion is to miss Christ's focus.
