Daniel knows why the Jewish people have been exiled and, in this prayer he confesses his own sins and the sins of the nation with. His prayer is one of deep mourning over what the Jewish people have done in their extreme disobedience. He prays fervently for the God, the covenant-keeping God of Israel, for mercy and forgiveness and to act upon the promises that He has made.
