Israel and Judah were experiencing political, national and spiritual darkness. Consequently, they faced God’s judgment and exile. The prophet proclaims hope and a future Messianic age of peace and safety (11:6-9). A King will be born and enthroned, and He will rule in righteousness on Mt. Zion (9:7; 32:1). God Himself promises a sign—a child who will be born of a virgin—and He will be King. This child will be called many names that describe His nature and His work. Today, we consider the name “wonderful counselor.”
