Before studying the phrase 'to die is gain' we need to consider three introductory comments - Paul here does not comment on the process of dying - Paul here does not legitimize suicide - Paul here does not indiscrimately apply this encouragement 1. Living in Light of Eternity - Death is certain and death can be sudden - Paul lived in light of these realities and all men ought to take this to heart 2. Preparing for Eternity - Paul was prepared for eternity and his house was in order - People must prepare for eternity and may do so only by trusting in Christ 3. Entering into eternity - Why will death be gain for Paul and all believers? - Because when they die God will be glorified - He will be glorified as they persevere to the end, as they remain faithful to the end, as they testify to His salvation and His Son to the end. - Because when they die they will be blessed - They will be blessed with His presence, they will be blessed with a radical transformation of their souls, their bodies, and their whole environment - As Thomas Watson said - 'The Christian's best things are to come'.
